What is SSP?
SSP (Safe and Sound Protocol) is a powerful intervention to down-regulate Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) using specially filtered music based on Polyvagal Theory developed over years by Dr. Stephen Porges.
ANS is an automatic life-support system composed of sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. In Polyvagal theory, the parasympathetic branch is further divided into:
-
ventral vagal complex – or the “social nerve,” supporting a sense of safety and social engagement
-
dorsal vagal complex – responsible for freeze or shutdown states.
SSP primarily aims to strengthen ventral vagal complex.
When ANS becomes out of bounds or stuck in a heightened state, it oscillates between extreme to extreme:
-
the sympathetic fight/flight state for immediate defense, and as a counterbalance,
-
the parasympathetic freeze state (dorsal vagal shut down) for defensive immobilization in situations that feel inescapable.
Being stuck in such defensive states as fight/flight or freeze limits growth and restoration—breathing, sleep, digestion, and healing. This is modern society: never-ending struggles to achieve relaxation.
SSP gently stimulates the middle-ear muscles, which often lose flexibility and become less responsive when the body is stuck in defensive states. By restoring their elasticity and resilience, SSP helps release ANS from defense mode and shift it toward a state of safety.
Summary of SSP (4 mins)
Summary of Polyvagal Theory (8 mins)
Beneficial to:
-
Deep relaxation
-
Balancing mind and emotions, emotional regulation
-
recovery from illness especially an invasive operation
-
enhancing digestive, reproductive, breathing functions
-
social engagement
-
cognitive flexibility and clear thinking
-
fine motor control
In clinical fields, SSP is commonly applied to:
-
PTSD
-
ASD
-
ADHD, ADD
-
tics such as blinking, jerking, shaking, throat clearing
-
chronic fatigue
-
sleeping disorder
-
brain fatigue, blurred vision, impaired memory
-
depression, anxiety
Pathways:
Initial assessment, setup of the program out of 3 pathways x 7 music streams , and duration are customized for you. Please contact me for the support.
Duration:
15-30mins and max. 1 hour a day.
Less is more. The less the titration is, the more robust result you will get. If you find something deep inside of you activated and makes you feel uncomfortable and overwhelmed, please take a break for a while and resume slowly. During this space/blank time, reconstruction is undergoing deep inside.
SSP is like scuba diving. Don’t rush but dive slowly and surge slowly. You will experience profound silence of the deep sea—tranquility inaccessible in everyday life and the opportunity to commune with the untouchable creatures of the ocean floor. They are subtle voices from your own usually you ignore and reject.
For the best result:
In clinical fields it is known the effect of SSP is expected most when it is combined with psychosomatic treatments such as Rolfing or Somatic Experiences. From my experiences, SSP and Rolfing “neck work” (intervention of the medulla oblongata, the center of ANS) work brilliantly well together. In modern society we count on visual cortical activities but what if these activities of the brain are actually driven by subconscious, uncontrollable, nonverbalized signals? SSP is the bridge to connect the brain with the realm of subconscious.
